6 Steps On How To Relieve Insomnia

Search Amazon.com for health and beauty assistance
There is few things in life more frustrating than having to lie there in bed, staring at the ceiling and being unable to fall asleep. Night after night you try to get some rest, but you just can't seem to get and stay asleep. You know you have to sleep, but for some reason it doesn't happen. There are some steps on how to relieve insomnia that might be able to help you get your much needed rest. Eventually, you might have to go see a specialist to help you, but if one of these steps works, then that expensive trip might be avoided.

1) Eat consistently throughout the day and be careful what you ingest. A sharp decline or spike in your blood sugar level can disrupt any sleep patterns you might fall into. Try avoiding caffeine the last half of the day. Avoid alcohol in the evening. Yes, alcohol might relax you and help you get to sleep, but the quality of the sleep isn't that good and you stay in a light sleep and are easily wakened. Tobacco can also have a negative effect on your ability to go into a deep sleep.

2) Light exercise in the evening. After a sensible dinner, take a nice evening stroll. This will help you work out tension you might be feeling and helps your body relax. Try to avoid doing anything strenuous as this might cause your body to get overstimulated.

3) Allow yourself a chance to wind down in the evening. Stay away from work, the news, or anything that might get your mind active. You have to get yourself to a point where your mind and body are moving towards a relaxed state. Take a nice warm bath and then sit back and relax sipping a nice warm chamomile tea or glass of milk with honey.

4) Set a regular bedtime. If you can put yourself on a routine, your body will respond favorably. Your body loves to be on a consistent schedule. Just make sure that you are able to keep that schedule going over the weekend.

5) Make and keep your bedroom a sleeping chamber. Try to keep everything out of there that might get you stimulated. Try to make it as dark as possible. Take your TV and computer out of the room so you aren't tempted to use them. Keep your work out of the bedroom as well. You have to associate it with just sleep.

6) Empty your brain. There are many ways to do this. The first thing to remember is not to remember anything. Don't think about the day you just had and don't think about what has to be done tomorrow. Read a boring book, do a boring crossword or sudoku puzzle, or count backwards from 100.

It may take a lot of planning and changing of behavior to get to the point where you can do these things on a regular basis, but no matter how much you don't want to do some of these things, life can't continue for long with your not getting the sleep you need. Whatever you have been doing so far obviously isn't working. Try to do something to change your routine following these steps on how to relieve insomnia and you might just find yourself getting that every elusive full nights sleep.

Tips About Complications Gastric Bypass Recovery

Search Amazon.com for Weight Loss assistance
A lot of people these days are considering having gastric bypass surgery and are wondering about any complication gastric bypass surgery may cause. The bad news is that there aren’t a lot of resources available for people. Some of the resources that are available are often written in medical language and hard understand. This is why there is a huge demand for this type of information to be written in easy to understand language that the everyday person, the type of people are most likely considering the surgery, can read. This is why we have put together the following guide to help you better understand some of the risks and complications gastric bypass surgery may result in.

It is important to remember that there are a lot of different forms of this surgery; this is why there can’t be one comprehensive guide for all of these different forms of the surgery. Due to this reason, the following guide is just a general list of risks and complications gastric bypass surgery can result in. It is important to remember that this guide should not replace professional help; you should always consult your doctor or medical health professional before considering any types of surgery or taking any medications. Secondly, you should note that everyone’s body will react differently to the surgery and healing times as well as any complications might be specific to the person.

In the most extreme conditions complications gastric bypass surgery causes can lead to death. It’s important to remember that this is really rare and only occurs in about one per 200 to 300 surgeries. The risk factor of a result as serious as this will all depend on many different things including your age, weight, and overall medical health condition.

Perhaps one of the most common complications from this surgery, although it is still extremely rare, is blood clots in the legs. These are more likely to appear in extremely overweight people that are classified as morbidly obese. There are many risks factors that are commonly associated with blood clots. If you are concerned about the likelihood of these complications gastric bypass surgery can potentially cause such as blood clots, you should always consult your doctor or medical health professional in order to get their medical opinion. In some cases your doctor may refer you to someone that specializes in gastric bypass recovery.

Another set of complications gastric bypass surgery is known to cause is leaking at one of the staples on the stomach. For the most part this complication can be treated with antibiotics and most people will make a full recovery quite easily. However there are some rare cases where this condition might need emergency surgery in order to correct it. This is perhaps one of the most rare complications in recent years as the risks of this type of surgery steadily decrease. If you have any questions about this medical procedure or complications caused by gastric bypass surgery, the best thing you can do is consult your medical healthcare professional or doctor to get their medical opinion.

Great Breakfast Choices that Keep You Healthy

Search Amazon.com for health and beauty assistance
You notice that keeping your weight off gets harder and harder throughout the years. As a result, you start to skip meals, but this is probably the biggest mistake many people commit. Rather than eating three big meals, spread these out and eat smaller portions. Satisfy your body without overstuffing yourself. Feeling too full is also uncomfortable. It’s time to feel just right so you can look good no matter what age. Most importantly, never ever skip the most important meal of the day: breakfast.

Now, you ask: could eating a supersized morning meal help you slim down? Many people go by the very belief that feasting on a mega breakfast helps you lose weight. There’s truth to this. Several studies have actually proven that people who took in more than 600 calories at breakfast lost more average pounds than those who ate moderate morning meals. A sample superb breakfast includes skim milk, whole wheat bread, turkey, mozzarella cheese, and yes, even dark chocolate. The slimming secret is in the makeup of the meal. Protein keeps blood sugar levels steady and staves off hunger, whereas eating carbs may protect you from afternoon cravings. By front-loading satisfying fat, protein, and carbs, you’ll make it easier to stick to your diet throughout the day.

Here is also a list of fruits you can stock your pantry with so that the nutrients they contain keep you feeling energized even when you have a tiring day ahead of you:

1.    Papaya: cut through its thick skin to get the juicy insides. This is a great source of skin-saving vitamin A and papain, an enzyme that aids in digestion. You can use this to sweeten your spicy tomato salsa. If it has yet to ripe, shred and toss with a sesame-soy dressing for a great Asian slaw.

2.    Prickly pear: the name may sound a bit too sharp for you, but this is actually mild and tasty. Once cup has nearly 10 percent of your daily calcium needs. Strengthen your bones and add this to your cereal.

3.    Guava: this fruit has a slightly spicy flavor, almost (but not quite) like cinnamon. This yellow or bright red beauty gives you as many antioxidants as broccoli does. Simply peel and eat it fresh or puree the pulp to make a great citrus juice. You can also add this to the sauce that marinates your chicken.

Furthermore, if you exercise three or four times a week for 30 to 45 minutes, your daily meals should provide enough nutrition to refuel your muscles. If you feel hungry post-gym, choose low-calorie munchies. Eat carbs if you plan to stretch yourself out a bit more because your body uses these to restore muscle glycogen, which gives you energy. Paring this with proteins may also help speed up the process.

Now is the time to make a change. Never underestimate the importance of breakfast in your quest to staying fit for life. If there’s one meal you should never skip, this one is definitely it.

How To Relieve Leg Cramps At Night

Search Amazon.com for health and beauty assistance
Are you struggling to find how to relive leg cramps at night? As you get older, you are more prone to being awoken in the middle of the night with bad leg cramps. This can last for a few seconds or up to quite a few minutes, but the soreness can end up lasting for quite a while and an otherwise very restful slumber can be interrupted. Dealing with these leg cramps that come in the middle of the night can be incredibly frustrating, but there are things you can do to help them from happening and make the episodes less severe when you do have them.

Staying hydrated is the first thing you are going to want to do. If you can drink at least eight glasses of water daily you will find that the cramping episodes will decrease in number. Dehydration plays a role in many cases of cramping.

Taking calcium supplements will also help. Many reasons for experiencing leg cramps can also be the result of a calcium deficiency. Drinking milk in the evening might help, but more than likely you are going to need to take a calcium supplement anyway, especially if you are female and in danger of getting osteoporosis.

Be sure to check prescriptions you might be taking because some of them may have a side-effect that brings about cramping or will have an adverse effect on the level of calcium, magnesium, or potassium in your body which may all cause a problem with cramping. They may also help bring about dehydration quicker. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions.

Stretching your calves often during the day and evening will also help keep your leg from cramping. You can stand facing the wall about an arm's-length from it and place your hands on the wall directly in front of you. Keep your heels firmly planted on the ground and then move your upper body close to the wall like you are doing a push-up in the standing position. You should be getting a little stretch on your hamstrings. Hold this position for thirty seconds and then stand on your toes holding it for another thirty seconds. After you have done this, push yourself back away from the wall to the starting position with your heels back on the ground. Do this three or four times to help you keep your legs from cramping. Also, consider riding a stationary bicycle to help keep your leg from supple.

If you do have a cramp at night, put your finger on your upper lip and apply pressure. This will many times help stop a cramp. You can also try to make sure that your covers are not tight around your feet and lie on your back and bring your toes towards your head.

For persistent troubles with leg cramps at night, you should go see your doctor to make sure there isn't something more serious wrong. Your doctor might be able to present you with some other options how to relieve leg cramps that could work.

What You Should Know About Weight Loss Prescription Medication

Search Amazon.com for Weight Loss assistance
If you are having trouble losing weight, it is possible that taking a prescribed weight loss medication may be a good approach. Generally, it is necessary for your current overall health and weight to be within a range that your doctor feels would benefit from the use of some type of weight loss medication. Before you decide to call up your doctor and ask for a weight loss prescription to help you lose weight, here are some things you should know.

Not everyone is a candidate for the use of weight loss medicines. Generally, your doctor will evaluate your current BMI or Body Mass Index before considering the possibility of writing a prescription for weight loss medication. If you have a BMI of 27 or over and have some type of obesity related health issues, there is a good chance your doctor will approve your request. If your current weight level does not appear to have triggered any other health issues thus far, you may have to register a BMI of over 30 before your physician will recommend one of the several prescription medications for weight loss available today.

Depending on your situation, your physician may choose to go with a weight loss medication that works in one of two ways. One option is to make use of a medication that works as an appetite suppressant. Weight loss medicines of this type simply help you to be satisfied with less food. If you are ambulatory and able to engage in some type of exercise and other activities, the appetite suppressant may be all you need to kick start your weight loss program.

The second option with a weight loss prescription is known as a fat absorption inhibitor. If you have other ailments that can be traced back to your weight, this may be the preferred way to go. A fat absorption inhibitor will block the body from absorbing most of the fat from your food. Instead, the fat moves through the system and is expelled as waste. As a result, the fat does not have the chance to store in the body.

Keep in mind there is the chance of side effects with all types of weight loss medications. While many people will experience nothing more than a few mild discomforts, other people will find that use of the prescription for weight loss causes severe problems. Some of the possible side effects include trouble sleeping, nausea, drowsiness and constipation. In more severe situations, persons using a weight loss prescription may become addicted, begin to have anxiety or panic attacks, or experience increases in blood pressure or heart rate. Any side effects should be reported to your doctor immediately.

If your weight problem is severe, your doctor may include some type of prescription medication for losing weight in your overall plan to drop the pounds. Still, an important key to your success has to do with attitude. If you do not take losing weight seriously, none of the weight loss prescription medications on the market today will overcome your lack of commitment and magically return you to a healthy weight range.

Binging On Healthy Treats

Search Amazon.com for Weight Loss assistance
You find that you like to eat a lot in between meals. Rather than crave for all those unhealthy treats, you could go for one that’s healthy for you. So, here is a list of amazing options that you could look into the next time you hear your stomach grumble and complain. This can actually help you when you age because your metabolism won’t be like how it was when you were a teenager. Now, any little binge could actually settle on your hips.

1.    Frozen chocolate milk. The cold temperature of this shake-like mixture may help you burn a few extra calories during digestion, and its protein satiates you. It’s a cinch to make as well. Throw a handful of ice into a blender with half a cup of skim milk and 2 tablespoons of light chocolate syrup.

2.    Pita chips and salsa. Spicy salsa is loaded with capsaicin, a compound found in chili peppers that turbo-charges your metabolism. Eat it with ten pieces of whole wheat pita chips instead of the tortilla counterpart, since they have fewer calories and have more fiber. The snack will set you back only 150 calories.

3.    Oatmeal. When a craving for creamy comfort food hits, pack a package of instant flavored oatmeal into the microwave. Each has about 100 calories of belly-filling oat grains and fiber.

4.    Whole wheat pizza. The pizza parlor kind has a white-flour crust, and research links consumption of white flour products to extra belly fat. But, try out mouth-watering whole wheat pizzas from health stores. You get a healthy pizza with all the goodies that have been freshly cooked. These come prepared without oil too.

5.    Fat-free yogurt. This trendy, tangy, and portable snack is high in protein and low in sugar, and some brands have fewer than 80 calories in a single-serving container. A recent study, in fact, found that people who ate three servings a day had a healthier body weight than those who didn’t eat yogurt at all.

6.    Fruit muesli bars. Besides the fact that you can easily tote these things around, muesli bars are the perfect snack anytime, anywhere. Each whole-grain bar is high in fiber and has only less than 100 calories, and many brands offer different varieties. You can have yours with nuts, honey, cinnamon, or even dried fruit.

7.    Nuts. Don’t let the fact that nuts high on fat scare you. The monounsaturated kind keeps your heart healthy and is filling. And, your body burns calories just to digest all that protein. Keep your daily intake to a quarter of a cup, which costs you just less than 200 calories.

8.    Omelette. Whisk together four egg whites and a yolk with sliced peppers or tomatoes, and cook in a skillet over medium heat. The result would be a healthy, flavorful snack under 150 calories. Most of the protein in eggs is found in the whites, and this plays a big part in boosting your metabolism. Try and see just how feeling it can be as well.

Facts about Allopurinol

Search Amazon.com for health and beauty assistance
Allopurinol is a prescription drug that is recommended for treatment of gout.  Common brand name of allopurinol is Zyloprim although generic versions of this drug are also available.  This drug is formulated to treat gouty arthritis and gouty kidney.  It also aids in lowering down uric acid concentrations in the blood of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Formulation:

Allopurinol comes in several formulations:

Capsules of 100mg
Scored tablets of 100 mg, 300 mg
Injection of 500mg/30 ml vial (although this is now named allopurinol sodium (Aloprim)
The drug must be stored in temperatures 55 F to 77 F

Usage:

How you use allopurinol depends on how your doctor would prescribe you to use it.  Initially, the highest tolerated dose is given when an acute attack of gout is experienced. Special consideration is also given in the presence of tophi.  Tophi (sing. tophus) are an accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints that triggers an inflammatory response.   The medication is taken once every morning with a glass of water after meals.  If the dosage is too strong, the doctor may either reduce the amount or divide the dose in a single day.  Remember to take the drug the same time each day to maintain its therapeutic level.  During the course of the therapy, it is important that you drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.  Taking in less than 8 glasses of water will increase your risk of forming uric acid stones.  The amount of urine you produce should be equal to the amount of water you take in.

If you forgot to take the medication and it is not near the time of the next dose, take the missed dose immediately.  If there is a short window between the time you remembered taking the dose and the time when you have to take the next one, do not take the previous dose.  Never double the amount of medication just to compensate for the missed dose.  Say for example you are scheduled to take the drug 3x a day and you forgot to take it in the morning.  Problem is, it is already noon by the time you remembered the dose.  Do not take a double dose at noon.  Just take your regular dose for the present schedule and disregard the previous one.  As much as possible do not forget to take your medication so that the drug will remain effective and therapeutic.  If you are regularly missing a dose or several of them within the week, consult your doctor for appropriate action.

After drinking the drug, see if you are experiencing some drowsiness.   If you do, do not do anything hazardous such as driving or operating heavy machinery.  Alcohol consumption is severely contraindicated as it decreases the effect of the drug.

Special Considerations:

Always inform your doctor if you have any medical condition aside from gout if you are to take this medication.  Usually, medical conditions that warrant caution in taking allopurinol are:
    Drug allergies
    Kidney disease
    and liver disease
    Congestive heart failure
    Hypertension
    Diabetes
    Undergoing chemotherapy

As it is important to take in large amounts of water, those with kidney problems and congestive heart failure will have problems in this area as they are usually in fluid restriction.  People with the above conditions also take certain medications that can interact adversely with allopurinol.  For example, taking the drug with chlorpropamide will potentiate the action of the oral hypoglycemic agent.

Reduce the intake of Vitamin C to prevent kidney stone formation.

Side Effects

There are several side effects that you have to look out for when you are taking allopurinol:
    Nausea and vomiting
    Epistaxis or nose bleeding
    Renal failure
    Bone marrow depression
    Jaundice
    Hepatomegaly or liver enlargement

Tests must be regularly done to monitor your blood count to see if bone marrow depression is occurring.  If you experience any of the previously stated conditions, call your doctor immediately for appropriate action.

If you have an infection and you are taking in ampicillin, inform your doctor so he would reschedule your medication.  The possibility of allergic reaction is increased in the presence of the drug, making it important to postpone taking allopurinol while undergoing antibiotic therapy.  Once you experience any form of allergic reaction (i.e. rash, itchiness, difficulty of breathing), stop taking the drug altogether and inform your doctor right away.

Wonderful sentiment about illegal immigration!

SNOPES: CORRECTLY ATTRIBUTED

I find this very interesting reading; so let's keep it going if you agree. It only takes a few days on the Internet and this will have reached 75% of the public in the U.S.A. Seniors need to stand up for what is right, not what the politicians want or big Corporations want.

This was sent to Mr. Rand, who is the Executive Director of AARP.

THIS LADY NOT ONLY HAS A GRASP OF 'THE SITUATION' BUT AN INCREDIBLE COMMAND OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!

Dear Mr. Rand,

Recently you sent us a letter encouraging us to renew our lapsed membership in AARP by the requested date. I know it is not what you were looking for, but this is the most honest response I can give you. Our gap in coverage is merely a microscopic symptom of the real problem, a deepening lack of faith.

While we have proudly maintained our membership for several years and have long admired the AARP goals and principles, regrettably, we can no longer endorse it's abdication of our values. Your letter specifically stated that we can count on AARP to speak up for our rights, yet the voice we hear is not ours. Your offer of being kept up to date on important issues through DIVIDED WE FAIL presents neither an impartial view nor the one we have come to embrace. We do believe that when two parties agree all the time on everything presented to them, one is probably not necessary. But, when the opinions and long term goals are diametrically opposed, the divorce is imminent. This is the philosophy which spawned our 200 years of government.

Once upon a time, we looked forward to being part of the senior demographic. We also looked to AARP to provide certain benefits and give our voice a power we could not possibly hope to achieve on our own. AARP gave us a sense of belonging which we no longer enjoy. The Socialist politics practiced by the Obama administration and empowered by AARP serves only to raise the blood pressure my medical insurance strives to contain. Clearly a conflict of interest there!

We do not understand the AARP posture, feel greatly betrayed by the guiding forces that we expected to map out our senior years and leave your ranks with a great sense of regret. We mitigate that disappointment with the relief of knowing that we are not contributing to the problem anymore by renewing our membership. There are numerous other organizations which offer discounts without threatening our way of life or offending our sensibilities.

This Presidential Administration scares the living daylights out of us. Not just for ourselves, but for our proud and bloodstained heritage. But even more importantly for our children and grandchildren. Washington has rendered Soylent Green a prophetic cautionary tale rather than a nonfiction scare tactic. I have never in my life endorsed any militant or radical groups, yet now I find myself listening to them. I don't have to agree with them to appreciate the fear which birthed their existence. Their borderline insanity presents little more than a balance to the voice of the Socialist mindset in power. Perhaps I became American by a great stroke of luck in some cosmic uterine lottery, but in my adulthood I CHOOSE to embrace it and nurture the freedoms it represents as well as the responsibilities it requires.

Your website generously offers us the opportunity to receive all communication in Spanish. ARE YOU KIDDING??? Someone has broken into our 'house', invaded our home without our invitation or consent. The President has insisted we keep the perpetrator in comfort and learn the perp language so we can communicate our reluctant welcome to them.

I DON'T choose to welcome them.

I DON'T choose to support them.

I DON'T choose to educate them.

I DON'T choose to medicate them, pay for their food or clothing.

American home invaders get arrested.

Please explain to me why foreign lawbreakers can enjoy privileges on American soil that Americans do not get?

Why do some immigrants have to play the game to be welcomed and others only have to break & enter to be welcomed?

We travel for a living. Walt hauls horses all over this great country, averaging over 10,000 miles a month when he is out there. He meets more people than a politician on caffeine overdose. Of all the many good folks he enjoyed on this last 10,000 miles, this trip yielded only ONE supporter of the current administration. One of us is out of touch with mainstream America . Since our poll is conducted without funding, I have more faith in it than one which is power driven.

We have decided to forward this to everyone on our mailing list, and will encourage them to do the same. With several hundred in my address book, I have every faith that the eventual exponential factor will make a credible statement to you.

I am disappointed.

I am scared.

I am MAD and I'm NOT gonna take it anymore!

Delving into the Facts of Air Embolism

Search Amazon.com for health and beauty assistance
Air embolism is a fatal condition when air enters the vascular system.  This air can now impede the circulation by causing potential blockage on any organ or part of the body.  The most dangerous and most fatal blockage that can form is at the brain and at the heart.  Air embolism shares the same signs and symptoms with stroke.  Several factors are to be carefully considered to rule out either condition for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Causes of Air Embolism

Among clinical manifestations, carefully history taking is the key to pinpoint air embolism.  Air embolism is particularly suspected when the following conditions have been traced:

Diving: divers often inhale nitrogen that is included in pressurized oxygen tanks that they bring with them when they dive.  High pressure conditions often melt nitrogen and will stay in a liquefied state as long as the person is in deep water.  During ascension, nitrogen goes back to its gaseous state, often causing embolism.

Surgery:  every surgical procedure imposes the risk of introducing air to a person’s vascular system.  Surgery performed in the nervous system, bones, nasal and throat passages, and the heart pose great risk in forming air embolism.

Trauma: head trauma or penetrating trauma of the lungs often causes formation of air embolism.

Invasive therapeutic or diagnostic procedures: these procedures often involve insertion of a catheter in a body part.  Therapeutic procedures such as hyperalimentation (total parenteral nutrition), intravenous therapy, and hemodialysis are often causes of air embolism.  This also includes diagnostic procedures such as spinal tap.

Oral sex during pregnancy: because the veins in the vagina are dilated, air can be pushed into the venous system.

Signs and Symptoms

If the following signs and symptoms are present along with favorable conditions, a person must suspect the presence of air embolism:

Agitation, irritability, anxiety (sense of impending doom)

Difficulty of breathing

Sudden substernal chest pain

Cyanosis

Tachycardia (rapid heart rate) or irregular heartbeat

Blurred vision

Headache

Loss of consciousness

Low blood pressure

Seizure

Coma

Paresthesia

Treatment

The first step in relieving air embolism is to administer 100% oxygen in a high-flow rate.  After which, the patient is placed in a left side lying Trendelenburg position (head lower than the feet) to prevent the air from traveling to the right side of the heart.  It is also recommended that the person be placed inside a hyperbaric chamber so as to remove the embolism.

Smokers Downfall

Search Amazon.com for health and beauty assistance
It’s so easy to pick up a stick, especially when you’re stressed. The inhaling and puffing can be so relaxing. After a while, though, you hear that smoker’s cough. Things can go downhill from here, and you need to get rid of that habit pronto. There are just too many disadvantages, and the biggest one would be early aging.

Yes, you were a fan of the cancer stick. Whether you were a once-a-day type of smoker, wouldn’t begin your day without having a stick, or even just hung around a chain smoker long enough, smoking significantly increases your risk of lung cancer (amongst several other types of cancer), heart disease, stroke, age-related blindness, peptic ulcer disease, and a new research shows, type 2 diabetes. More alarming would be that women are more susceptible than men to these tobacco-related problems.

The good news is that even if you quit just 24 hours ago, your body would have begun to heal itself. Your blood pressure and pulse would have dropped to normal, the oxygen level in your blood would have increased, the risk of heart decreased, and most importantly, your chances for a longer life upped. Things even get better from here because if you’ve been smoke-free for a year, you’ve already reduced your excess risk of heart disease by half. And after 15 years, your risk becomes that of a non-smoker.

As for lung cancer, five years after quitting smoking, the death rate for an average smoker decreases by almost half, and 10 years later, it is at par to that of non-smokers. That’s why the best time to stop would be now, because while it is possible to completely recuperate from it, it does take a very long time. To accelerate the healing, stock up on antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies, which can encourage cellular repair and ward off cancer-causing free radicals. Even when you haven’t quit yet but are planning to, eating a diet rich in antioxidants is a good idea. Water, milk, fruits, and vegetables worsen the taste of cigarettes, making quitting the habit easier for you.

Finally, make exercise a priority. This not only helps restore lung function by increasing blood flow to your lungs, but is also a great stress-buster. When you’ve gotten addicted to your workout routine, you’re less likely turn to a stick when you’re tense or stressed. Plus, when you do continue to smoke even when you’ve become more active, it’s so much harder to last long. You’ll see that it’s easy to feel tired and breathless. The head rush happens more often because your lungs are weak.

For all you who want to take care of your health as well as your skin, there’s no other way but to stop smoking altogether. Whether you want to do it cold-turkey or gradually, you need to make the decision right now. Soon, you’ll see that your skin is no longer as dry as it once was. Plus, your breath just smells a lot better. Smokers have this smell about them that is just entirely too unpleasant.

Astigmatism: What it is and How to Cure it

Search Amazon.com for health and beauty assistance
Astigmatism is a refractive condition of the eye where the surface of the cornea or the crystalline lens is irregular.  This irregularity will then cause the focus of images of to fall short or beyond the retina in several different distances.  Oftentimes, astigmatism is accompanied by myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightendess).

To fully understand the surface of the cornea, one must consider the shape of a basketball in comparison to a football.  If you would look closely at the basketball, the shape is even all throughout the ball.  This is the relative normal surface of the cornea.  While with the foot ball, the shape is entirely irregular.  If this will be your corneal surface, the resulting refraction will be also irregular.

Causes of Astigmatism

As stated, astigmatism is stemmed from irregularities from the corneal and lenticular surfaces.  The changes on the surfaces of those refractive medias can be due to:

Genetics – astigmatism often runs in the family.  If you were born to parents that have significant astigmatism, there is a possibility that you will develop the condition.

Nature of work – those exposed to near-point work such as sewing, and also spending too much time in front of the TV or computer can cause changes in the cornea and crystalline lens.

Trauma – a trauma of the eye that can cause corneal tear can cause alteration of the corneal surface.

Surgery – corneal transplant, cataract removal, and poor laser surgery can alter the corneal curvature.

Signs and symptoms

The signs and symptoms of astigmatism can mimic those of myopia or hyperopia.  And manifestations of such signs and symptoms can also depend on the severity of astigmatism.

Mild astigmatism often show signs and symptoms of:
Asthenopia or eye strain, especially when reading
Frontal headache
Nausea and vomiting
Presence of shadow in letters

Moderate to severe astigmatism will show:
Presence of wavy lines depending on the area of astigmatism
Tilting of the head in a certain angle in order to see clearly

Treatment

There are several forms of treatment for astigmatism.  Other treatments are temporary, giving the person clear vision on specific points of the day.  Other treatments are permanent, giving the person freedom from blurry vision due to astigmatism..

Corrective lenses: these corrective lenses are called torric lenses.  Instead of the regular lens, these lenses only give correction on specific points or meridians.  Torric lenses come in two forms: regular eye glasses and contact lenses.  There is not much to explain with eye glasses aside from it being placed in front of your eyes.
For torric contact lenses, they come in several forms:  soft torric and torric rigid gas permable (RGP) lenses.  Soft torric lenses are bigger in diameter and softer for the eyes, allowing your cornea to breath.   Torric RGP lenses, on the other hand can be used in two ways: One to correct vision and two: to reform the shape of the cornea so you can eventually see clearly without wearing contact lenses for several hours a day.  This procedure is known as orthokeratology.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK):  in this procedure, the cornea is shaped by having the laser remove certain superficial cells of the cornea.  This process will thin out the corneal surface, altering its ability to refract light, thereby permanently correcting astigmatism.

Laser in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK): this has the same principle as PRK, only the superficial layer of the cornea is carefully peeled off so that the laser can target the deeper layers of the cornea.  Once reshaping is done, the corneal surface is returned to the original place and sealed in order to heal.

Contrary to popular belief, wearing eye glasses will not correct or worsen your refractive condition.  What determines your vision is your current health state, presence of any medical condition (i.e. hypertension, diabetes mellitus), and your age.   Your eye hygiene is also important, meaning how you read and how you distance yourself from the computer or TV.

Your Drinking Habits

It’s so easy to live life as if there were no tomorrow. But then, your irresponsible ways can take their toll on you. It gets even harder as you get older. Your body no longer can take so much of it and getting over a hangover from a party sometimes takes days. Not to mention your weight! You can gain easily even if you just stray from your diet a bit. This time, you should remove the word diet from your vocabulary. These won’t work, and when you get older, you should actually think about a change in lifestyle.

Back then, you were a habitual yo-yo dieter. Repeatedly losing and regaining the same five pounds affects your body’s metabolic rate and calorie-burning power. You may lose a lot at first, but eventually, it gets harder and harder even when you’ve become stricter with what you put in your mouth. This type of diet decreases your body’s long-term immune function. Although experts aren’t really sure why, losing and regaining weight reduces the activity of cells that fight colds and infection, as well as kill cancer cells. Luckily, you can always bounce back from it. Remain fit for good this time by considering a change in lifestyle. Commit and have the willpower to stay right on track.

Moreover, your tequila-shot days likely led not only to some pretty stupid moves, but in all probability, also screwed up your health big time. Binge drinking, defined as drowning five or more drinks at one time consuming enough alcohol to reach insane levels, increases your risk to becoming addicted to it. Drinking sprees also affect your memory, since large amounts of alcohol kill brain neurons. Aside from that, it does big damage to your liver. The first stage to liver damage is the fatty liver stage where some fat deposits may occur in your liver because of the booze. Further alcohol abuse leads to the hepatitis stage where your liver is enlarged and you may develop severe jaundice. The third stage would be cirrhosis, where you could be at risk for liver cancer and might require a transplant.

Since women are twice as likely to develop alcoholic diseases as men, those all-night, drowning-drinks-with-the-gals sessions would have probably harmed you a lot more than you thought. As long as you quit your binge escapades while you were in the first two stages, you’ll probably be okay. Of course, that shouldn’t mean that you make it reach that point. It’s not only expensive, but a lot of hassle for you as well. Even if you’re a moderate drinker, your liver has probably repaired itself since those wild days. And, though those lost brain cells are forever gone, studies of recovering alcoholics suggest that when you put an end to those bouts of drinking, you can regain memory function even without the missing cells.

Just remember to drink a lot less, especially when you’re no longer considered young. Life would be so much better for you, and you’ll see just how better you can be when it comes to being active.

Does Your Teen Think She Is Fat. Teenage Diet Plans

Has your teenager stopped eating because they think their overweight? Are they always talking about a teenage diet plan or other ways to lose weight? Be aware! This may not be a passing mood change. It could be heading your teen into some serious health problems. What you find here may help you get a handle on what you need to do to help them.

Many times teenage diet plans can be dangerous to the teen’s health. Due to the danger in teenage diet plans it is important to consult their doctor before beginning any diet. Most doctors will be against putting a teen on a diet plan; as it is unnecessary in most cases. If your teen is in need of a diet plan it’s important to go about it the right way.

Teens are at an age, where peer pressure, has a serious affect on their body and mental image of themself. Many healthy teens will begin to obsess about weight problems that don’t exist. This often makes them take dangerous steps to fit in; such as, starving themselves.

The best type of teenage diet plan is one that incorporates all the nutrients needed to build strong bones and maintain general health. If your teen must be put on a diet plan consult your doctor. They should be able to help you set up a healthy plan.

It is normal for teens to carry a small amount of extra weight. Most teens will lose it as they continue to grow. It is also important to teach your teen that everyone is not supposed to be the same.

Just because your daughters best friend weighs 105 lbs doesn’t mean that it is a healthy or even an attractive weight for your daughter. There are many factors that come into play when it comes to a healthy weight; such as, height, bone size, and family history.

A good teenage diet will consist of very few junk foods or none at all. These foods have no beneficial nutrients. They also carry many empty calories and loads of fat. Eating too much junk food can actually put your teen at risk for weight related diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

One of the essential parts to a good teenage diet plan is plenty of exercise. In many cases exercise is all that is required. If your teen exercises regularly they will build lean muscle which naturally burns calories.

In order for your teen to get the greatest benefit out of their diet plan it is important to make sure it includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. Teach your teen to pack healthy snacks of fruit and vegetables when leaving the house. This will prevent them from picking up fast food or junk food when they get hungry.

A healthy teenage diet contains lean meats. Eating small portions of lean meat can help teens to lose weight as it aids in the digestion process. Keep them away from large amounts of red meat because it is high in fat and is harder to digest. Instead cook them meals with chicken and fish.

All teens should be getting plenty of skim milk as it has less fat then whole and still contains the necessary calcium. They should also replace any juice drinks and soda with water. As you know water is the best hydrater for your teens body. One way to get them to drink more water is to explain how it will help keep their skin healthy and help reduce the severity of acne. That gets them every time.

Teenage diet plans are not recommended unless necessary. If it is necessary then make sure to consult your teen’s doctor to put together a healthy diet plan.

Undo Your Past Health Mistakes

Been careless with your health in the past? You’ve all committed to your fair share of muck-ups in life. While poor choice in men and clothing is something you can chalk up to growing up experiences, health faux pas are an entirely different matter altogether. How you treated your body a few years ago can make all the difference to your health as you grow older. If your habits were reckless years back, odds are your past will come back to haunt you. From smoking because you thought it looked sexy, to spending long hours under the sun without sunscreen for a great tan, yesterday’s health vices could actually have an unfortunate effect on you. You can actually do some damage control as long as you do it right now.

For instance, did you have too much sun back then? Sun damage is cumulative. So, even if you have stopped spending several hours in the sun like you did in the previous years, any new damage to your skin will keep adding to the old harm you’ve already collected. The scary bit: sun exposure is the number one cause of aging skin because it leads to cell death, causing wrinkles, age spots, and uneven skin tone.

Luckily, you can do something about fried skin. It’s never too late to undo some previous damage and skirt new harm entirely. Use anti-aging cream; avoid the sun between its peak hours of ten in the morning and one in the afternoon; and never leave home without slathering on some sunscreen. Since sunlight leads to the formation of free radicals, which cause premature cell death, stocking up on foods that contain fiver and antioxidants (like salads and nuts) is always a good idea.

You could also ask your doctor for oral antioxidants containing amino acids like alanine and lycopene, to neutralize free radicals. As long as you take these steps before you hit the age of 40, your skin should do okay. This is said to be the case because 40 is the age when your body’s hormonal changes might not let your skin’s repair mechanism work optimally.

The same care also goes to your diet. Repeatedly losing then regaining the same five pounds affects your body’s metabolic rate and calorie-burning power. The first time you crash diet, you may lose ten pounds. The second time you do it, you may no longer lose as much. This is because of your body’s decreased capacity to burn calories quickly. This may also decrease your body’s long-term immune function.

In many cases, the damage done by yo-yo dieting is reversible. They key is to aim for permanent weight loss instead of bouncing back and forth with the pounds. First, figure out why your weight loss attempts failed in the past. Was intense stress making you binge? Were your friends not being supportive? Were you not committed or motivated enough to achieving your goal? Pinpointing where you went wrong in the past will help you avoid doing the same. If you can see a nutritionist, then do so because they can put you on a sustainable diet.

Acne Scars - Treatments and Natural Home Remedies

Stop suffering!  Whether your acne scars are minor or deeply pitted you have several options for  acne scars treatments that you can use.  They range from all natural home remedies to fairly complex and expensive procedures performed by your doctor.  The number of scars you have, the time you want to invest in your treatments as well as the cost of treatment and severity of the scars themselves will determine which option(s) are best for you.

For most people, they should consider waiting to get their scars removed until their acne is well controlled. There is no sense in spending time and money removing your scars if you're going to just get more of them.  It's also wise to try and find relief using the simplest, most natural, and inexpensive methods first and only try the more expensive methods if you are unable to get the results you really want using these more natural options.

Here are some of the options for clearing up your acne scars that you can investigate so that you can find just the right option for you and your lifestyle:

1.  Many natural remedies have been shown to work very well for many people.  Using compresses made of olive oil, vitamin E, lemon juice, and even urine have been touted by some to be extremely effective in reducing the appearance of scars. These forms of all natural remedies do work better on lighter scars rather than the deeply pitted scars.

2. For people who have more, or deeper, scarring you may need to consider some more advanced, invasive procedures such as laser, IPL, or chemical peels.  These all work in slightly different ways but the basic idea is to remove the top layer, or top several layers, of skin and allowing new unblemished skin to form.  Many of these procedures will actually help speed up new skin growth by stimulating the elastin and collagen production in the skin.

For most of these procedures you will need to see your doctor, but for the IPL treatment it can be done by a trained practitioner which can save a little money.  Most of these procedures will have a short healing time, usually just a few days, but it will take longer if the scars are more frequent or deeper and pitted.

Each one of these procedures has it's own price schedule which can vary significantly from one to another so when you talk to your doctor about the different processes you want to make sure to find out how much per treatment and how many treatments you'll likely need.

When it comes to finding the best possible  acne scars treatments for you, your skin and your budget remember that you have a lot of choices.  You will need to be willing to invest a little time to adequately research the pros and cons of each type of treatment to determine which type is the best option for you.  Just don't give up and think you have to settle for blemished skin... you don't.  There is hope.

Fighting Alcoholism Health Concerns

In your battle against alcoholism, health concerns seem to mount that make overcoming alcoholism more urgent. The opponent is tough and may bring about a life of misery both mentally and physically. It could be useful to look at the dangers that accompany this addiction. It can bring about problems with nutrition, a type of arthritis, heart disease as well as liver and kidney disease, and a host of other ills that you would be better off not having and can avoid if you can decrease significantly or eliminate altogether your alcohol consumption.

Nutrition can be effected by too much drink. It can promote overeating at times and under-eating at others. It is easily abused and takes up needed space in stomachs. The problem with this is that it can cause malnutrition. Your body tends to believe that it has met it's daily caloric needs and gives you a feeling of being full. The bad thing about this is that your body then has to go without the proper nutrients it needs and your body suffers.

Gouty arthritis can be caused by alcoholism. Gouty arthritis is a very painful rheumatic disease. It will leave deposits of spiny and needle-like crystals of uric acid.

Fetal alcohol syndrome can have long-term negative effects on mental and physical growth, physical ailments and possible deformities, and developmental delays.

There are cardiovascular issues to be concerned about as there is a risk of heart disease and certain kinds of strokes. There is also the risk of high blood pressure that comes with alcohol abuse.

Alcohol abuse plays with your blood sugar levels in harmful ways causing it to go up and down. Hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia are common in alcoholics as well as diabetes.

Kidney disease is another risk. This will cause the kidneys to be enlarged and alters proper hormone function. The disease can also bring about kidney failure.

Liver disease is a concern as it can cause alcoholic hepatitis or alcoholic cirrhosis. Alcoholic hepatitis is the less serious and can be treated while cirrhosis is irreversible and may require a liver transplant.

There is a numbness and tingling that can be caused by alcoholism called neuropathy. Neuropathy can be painful and is associated with nerve damage.

The threat of dementia is real and can be brought about by several things associated with alcoholism.

Obesity is also a major concern which brings about a much broader range of health threats and concerns.

There are also mental health concerns that you must worry about. Alcoholism can bring about depression, anxiety, and insomnia.

While you may have already had a significant amount of damage done to your body, you are still better off trying to break your addiction. There are many of these which can be made less severe and are reversible once you have stopped drinking. There are others, though that have life long repercussions. Be sure that it is not too late. There are always benefits to being able to stop and those benefits will always outweigh any perceived positives. Hopefully you will research further the health problems that come with alcoholism and use them as weapons in your fighting alcoholism.

How Bad Is It A Look At Alcoholism Stages

Alcoholism is a disease or a condition in which you can get progressively worse and the alcoholism stages can help you see where you are. You started off drinking with it under control, but as time and many bottles have gone down you may be finding yourself in a deeper hole. As long as you are breathing you still have a chance. It will help you know how far you have to go if you look at where you are. As you recover from alcoholism, it will also help you to look back and see just how far you've come.

One of the first stages is where drinking moves beyond the social reasons to your trying to escape and to help your mood. This is where you drink so that you can handle life. It won't be too long before the drinking is handling and controlling you. Escaping life is not controlling it. The problems will still be there later.

The next is the stage where you have to drink more and more for the same effect. Your tolerance has grown and it takes a lot more for you to get the same feeling you used to. This can become dangerous as you can begin experiencing more of the harmful effects of drinking too much.

You may have reached a point where you know you might have a problem starting. As you try to control it you go into a situation thinking that you are going to hold back on the drinking. You think you will only have a few drinks, but a few turns into a lot. This is where you start to lose control.

A stage that may follow here is one in which you start becoming more interested in getting your next drink than those things that used to be much more important. It could be your work, your friends, or your family. This is the beginning of the obsession and a point in which it becomes harder to turn around. Your job may be in jeopardy, but you are getting to a point where you just don't care. Those closest to you will probably try to help you, but their influence on you will be less powerful than the influence that alcohol has. You may choose your drink more over those you love. This is where you start losing the most.

You will get to a point that you start neglecting yourself. You have gone past caring for those around you and now come the point that you just don't care anymore. You start neglecting your hygiene, your health, your future, and your life. Nothing else matters, but the drink.

The final stage is where you have lost total control. You have turned your love for drinking into a full-blown obsession. All you can think about is getting the next bottle. You could very well find yourself deathly ill or homeless at this point because of your insatiable desire for alcohol.

While it can get worse, it doesn't have to. You can stop the course of your life if you will allow yourself a chance to get the help you need. Get help while you still can.

Seven Alcoholism Symptoms You May Want To Watch For

When you think you may have come to the point where you might have a problem with alcoholism, symptoms may be pointing you to the truth. Some may be the effects that it has on you physically, other symptoms might be the effect that it has on you in other ways. Many symptoms will have to do with those around you and your relationships. There are many things that might be pointing you towards the truth, but here are seven symptoms that might help the light come on in understanding what is happening to you.

1- You may have tried to prove to yourself that you don't have a problem by trying to stop for a period of time. Some would try a week. If you can't make it past a couple of days without getting a drink, you very well could have a problem with alcoholism.

2- If all you can think about is getting that next drink and you feel a bit out of control, you definitely have a problem. What many people fail to do here is be honest with themselves. It is a hard thing to admit that you have lost control. Do yourself a favor and be truthful about this. Honestly answer the question if you have lost control.

3- If alcohol or the thought of it takes up a large amount of your time and focus, you might have a large problem. Do you constantly have to work to get yourself in situations where can you get that drink? Do you have to work hard to shuffle things around it or hide it? Do your thoughts easily stray to when can you get that next drink? If this is how it is, you might be nearing that critical stage where you are obsessed with alcohol. Once you have reached that point, it becomes incredibly hard to quit.

4- Are you feeling guilty about your drinking or feel shame about it? The tough thing about this is people usually begin lashing out or getting defensive. Sometimes people will feel defeated and see no point in trying to try to get well. They just give up. Both of these can turn into bigger problems. Do not let this get out of control.

5- Are you feeling withdrawal symptoms when you go any length of time without a drink? Some things to look for are anxiety, depression, fatigue, headache, insomnia, irritability, loss of appetite, shaking, or sweating. Any combination of these that you feel can point to a problem, especially if they can only be remedied by taking a drink.

6- You may go into a situation thinking that you are only going to have a couple of drinks, but once you get started, it's hard to stop. If you are constantly unable to drink as little as you wanted and tend to go overboard, then alcoholism is very possible.

7- You may not want to admit that they are right, but if friends or family members are beginning to worry about you and think you might have a problem, you may want to listen to them or at least seriously consider that they are on to something. You might think that they are only wanting to control you, but it is more likely that they are genuinely concerned that you are about to destroy your life. At least consider this might be true.

The hardest thing to do is to admit that you have a problem. This will take some serious introspection and some honest answers as you look at the alcoholism symptoms, but the sooner that you can come to the truth, the sooner you can get about conquering your problem.

Your Facts - Alcoholism Is A Serious Problem You Might Have

Looking at the facts, alcoholism abuse is not a new problem. The negative effects of drinking too much has been witnessed countless times in cultures all over the world all through history. If you are struggling through it, you are not alone. There are treatment plans that are more effective now than ever before and one of them might just be the one that will work for you. There is no plan that will work for everyone. While some have been widely effective for many people, it won't work on everyone. On any given day you can find over 10 million people struggling with alcoholism and trying to stop.

How do you know if you have a problem? If you have a strong and controlling craving for alcohol, then you could have a problem. It is a lot more evident when it has reached the point where there is a loss of control. You have created a physical dependence on it and a tolerance for alcohol in which you need to drink more today than you did last week to have the same effect. It quickly and quietly takes over your life and can cause you to lose all that is closest to you.

Beyond this there are social problems that may very well come about. You can find yourself in a situation that nothing matters as much as getting that drink. You can have relationships at work suffer as much as your performance. You will become less trustworthy and could lose your job. There are also friends and family members that were once close to you that all of a sudden now have to take a back seat to what you have in your glass. You end up sacrificing your life for the passing sensation you get when you drink. Whether you admit it or not, none of those people matter to you as much as that drink does.

There are also many health problems that come with drinking heavily and alcoholism. There is heart disease and other cardiovascular issues that may come about. It isn't uncommon to have liver and kidney problems. You may find yourself susceptible to cancers of different kinds. Blood sugar levels are adversely effected. There are also mental health problems that accompany long-term alcoholism. The price goes far beyond what you initially for that drink.

You can stop at any time, but you have to want to stop. No one can give you the real reason to do it. No one can convince you that you have a problem. It's all on you to control. The earlier you try to stop it, the greater your chances are in being successful.

There is a lot in the way of denial as people believe that becoming an alcoholic is something that happens to other people. No one wants to believe it can happen to them and when they see that it might be happening or it is pointed out to them, they try to make light of it. Get the right facts, alcoholism is a major problem and you very well could have it. Try to get help as soon as possible.

Coping with Hunger Pangs

The older you get, the harder it is to keep weight off. So, why do you find yourself reaching for that third slice of pizza when you’re already bursting out of your clothes? Knowing the signs of hunger, the cues for stress eating, and what triggers your cravings will help tame you when hunger strikes. With all the energy you devote to the struggle for weight control, you know remarkably little about the most obvious reasons diets fail: you feel the hunger deep within you. What’s going on when your body tells you insistently that you have to take that burger even though you’ve got more than enough room of fat stores to pull from? Why can some people go on without eating while others are weak within hours after their meal?

Researchers are constantly hard at work investigating the most of human impulses. The bad news is that the task is proving to be growingly difficult. Just when they think they’ve uncovered the key to appetite restraint, a new hormone or biological process emergences. But what these people discovered is still pretty fascinating. Hopefully, knowing what some of these are might make those hunger pangs a little easier to control.

First of all, you need to consider your body clock. You’ve been at work all morning, your mind is on your task, and you’re consistently thinking about that deadline. Suddenly, your tummy gurgles and you find yourself thinking about fries, burgers, and dessert. You’re hungry again, but why? The why part makes perfect revolutionary sense. For most of human history, food was in constant short supply, and if you didn’t eat when food was available, there was a very good chance that you’d suffer from starvation. If you didn’t eat, you’d die. This is a horrible survival strategy, and one that’s no longer applicable in today’s society. It’s important to note that the drive to eat as much as you could has spawned long before the modern times.

While the world has changed significantly, your basic bodily urges remain the same. Now that the hunting and gathering society is non-existent, you still live in the ancient era. It’s easy to eat because you know you have to. But it’s just as hard to stop, and that’s because back then, you weren’t even supposed to. Your DNA is your biggest enemy here, but it could also be your strongest ally. You simply have to know the science behind it so you can get a better grip at handling your hunger pangs.

You need to control your hormones now and know the difference between actual hunger and stomach contractions. You know that you can’t control your urges once the hunger hormones are in chaos. It’s a matter of adjusting your habits and adjusting your meals to smaller portions. Eat less but eat more often. Also, choose foods that are heavy on the stomach but are low in fat. The ones that fall low on the glycemic index are said to stave off hunger for longer periods of time. Know what these are and win over your genetic urges.
